As of 2010 the population was 4,045 making it the second least populated county in Minnesota. They have 142 years of combined law enforcement experience. Even innocent people, if they appear to be looking at a fugitive too closely or accidentally point their way, may find themselves to be the next victim of a dangerous and frightened criminal hiding from law enforcement. It is operated locally by the Lake of the Woods County Sheriffs Office. They work in all three duty stations and are allowed to live in any three of the stations.
